Florida regulators have requested that pharmacy benefit managers turn over detailed prescription data, including patients' names, birthdates, medications, prescribing providers and dispensing pharmacies, Bloomberg reported Feb. 28.
Florida regulators have requested that pharmacy benefit managers turn over detailed prescription data, including patients' names, birthdates, medications, prescribing providers and dispensing pharmacies, Bloomberg reported Feb. 28.Â
The request, issued by the state's Agency for Health Care Administration, applies to all prescriptions that were filled in Florida during 2024, including for out-of-state residents.Â
The request stems from a 2023 state law aimed at increasing oversight of PBMs, intermediaries that negotiate drug prices between insurers and pharmacies. However, the broad scope of the data request has raised alarms for privacy advocates, healthcare providers and PBMs.Â
Critics told the news outlet that the state's demand could expose sensitive medical details, including mental health treatments, reproductive healthcare and other prescriptions.Â
